Dentist offers latest technology

Digital X-rays use less radiation than film-based X-rays

Dr. Barton Foutz is a fourth-generation dentist on the cutting edge.

“My great grandfather would be astounded by today’s technology,” Dr. Foutz said.  “When he began his practice in Utah in the 1880’s, dental drills were pedal-operated and the only anesthetic available was whiskey.”

“By the thirties (my grandfather’s era) nitrous oxide and x-rays were in general use, and when my father started his practice here in the sixties, the high-speed, air-driven drill was the latest invention.”

However, according to Dr. Foutz who began his family dental practice in 1986 and is currently at 2510 Wigwam Parkway, the most high-tech dental advances have occurred in just the past several years.

“Keeping abreast of dental innovations requires continual study and commitment,” Foutz explained.    “By the time training is completed   for  a new piece of equipment, there is

already a newer model being introduced to take its place.”

And the pace is just as rapid for cosmetic procedures thanks to advances in space-age resins, ceramics, and adhesives.

“These durable, tooth-colored materials have caused a revolution in cosmetic restorations,” Foutz said.  “Porcelain veneers are all the rage and silver fillings have become practically obsolete.”

“These days a young person who comes in with a cavity,” Dr. Foutz said, “will likely be treated with a water-assisted dental laser which replaces the conventional drill.  It produces no heat, no vibrations and, in most cases, eliminates the need for needles and anesthesia.”

The newest innovation in dentistry is the digital x-ray. It uses less than 20% of the radiation needed by  traditional film-based x-rays.  The images

are viewed on a computer screen and can be e-mailed to the patient’s home or to the insurance provider.

Dr. Foutz also offers invisible braces for straightening teeth, and clenching control devices to alleviate tension and headaches.

All procedures and services available from Dr. Foutz are explained and illustrated on his extensive website. You can meet the doctor and his staff online, watch streaming videos, and see before-and-after images of the various procedures.

There’s also a dental glossary, frequently asked questions, and the popular “Self-Diagnosis Guide.

“I can always tell when a new client has been to our website,” Foutz said.

“They seem comfortable and relaxed, and they are more knowledgeable about what they want or need,” he said.
