Amalgam fillings, also known as ‘silver’ fillings, will darken and corrode as they age. Also, since they contain about 50% mercury, amalgam fillings expand and contract in response to hot and cold foods and liquids.

1- the reoccurrence of decay under the filling which would soon require a root canal procedure, or
